La NASA y el Centro Nacional de Datos de Nieve y Hielo (NSIDC, según sus siglas en inglés) han determinado que las placas de hielo en Groenlandia se funden cada vez más rápido cada verano. Según el NSIDC, el deshielo ha sido muy acelerado en este inicio de verano en el hemisferio norte, dándose hasta tres grandes deshielos de masas heladas hasta el 19 de junio. Esto hace que la tasa de deshielo del Polo Norte esté bastante por encima que en años pasados, a excepción de 2012, año en el que más hielo se fundió en el verano en el Polo Norte de toda la historia de las observaciones.
No solo el hielo se funde cada vez más rápido en Groenlandia, sino que también las temperaturas han aumentado demasiado este verano, sobre todo en la costa de la isla más grande del planeta. El 9 de junio se registraron 24 grados de temperatura máxima en Nuuk, la capital de la isla. Hablamos de 24 grados, temperatura normal en cualquier punto de una zona templada situada entre los 30 y los 60 grados latitud, pero no tan normal en una zona polar, es como si en España se registrasen 50ºC en verano, por ejemplo. En zonas interiores la temperatura fue ligeramente inferior.
Imágenes por satélite de la NASA demuestran cómo el hielo se va fundiendo cada vez más rápido. Hay imágenes de zonas de Groenlandia que se ven totalmente blancas, tomadas hace un par de años, y hay nuevas imágenes de exactamente las mismas zonas y las mismas fechas (inicios de verano) que se ven blancas pero con manchas azules de agua líquida. Los expertos apuntan a que ciertas zonas de Groenlandia están experimentando el deshielo desde el mes de abril, lo cual es grave, ya que nunca antes había comenzado durante la primavera boreal.
Las principales consecuencias de este rápido deshielo podrían ser un fuerte aumento del nivel del mar, aparte de un deshielo todavía mayor, ya que si hay más agua líquida rodeando al hielo, su fusión será mucho más fácil, por efecto dominó.
Los científicos esperan a ver los resultados que arrojen julio y agosto, meses en los que el deshielo puede que sea mayor o se nivele. Dichos resultados serán cruciales.

According to NSIDC, the melting has been very fast during the beginning of this summer in the Northern hemisphere. Three major meltings have hapenned until June 19th. This makes that the melting rate of this year is much higher than the one of years before, with the exception of 2012, year when more ice melted in the North Pole in all history of observations.
Not only does ice melt faster in Greenland, but also temperatures have rised a lot this summer. 24ºC were registered as maximum temperature in Nuuk, the capital city of the largest island in the world on June 9th. We are talking of 24ºC, a normal temperature for any place in the Earth in a temperate zone between 30 and 60 degrees of latitude, but this temperature is very high for a polar zone, it happens as in Spain 50ºC were reached in summer, for instance. In inner zones of Greenland, the temperature was much lower.
Satellite images from NASA prove how ice is melting faster and faster. There are images of zones completely white taken a couple of years ago, which have been compared with images from the same zone and date (beginning of summer) that are white but with blue spots of liquid water. Experts state that certain zones in Greenland are melting since April, which is a serious issue, since ice melting had never started during spring in Greenland.
The main consequences of this fast melting could be a steady increase in the sea level and a stronger melting. As there is more liquid water surrounding the ice, more ice melts, by domino effect.
Scientists wait now to see the results of July and August, months when more ice melts. They state that the melting could be stronger or that it could balance. That results will be very important.
