Médicos del Hospital Virgen del Rocío de Sevilla, España, han conseguido intervenir a una paciente con graves quemaduras en su cuerpo con células de su propia piel. Es el primer transplante autólogo de piel a nivel mundial que se realiza en grandes quemados.
La joven de 29 años sufría múltiples quemaduras en el 70% de su cuerpo desde el mes de abril, recibiendo células de su propia piel. Este hecho va a acelerar su recuperación, reducir las infecciones y lo que es más importante, anular el rechazo inmunológico, ya que si las células implantadas tienen el mismo ADN que el resto de células, el sistema inmunológico no atacará a las células implantadas. Las células de la paciente han sido implantadas junto con agarosa, una sustancia obtenida a partir de las algas, y que añade elasticidad a la piel. Es muy importante la capacidad de deformación de esta piel, que es la que permite que legalmente esta pueda ser utilizada en una intervención quirúrgica.
A partir de 4 cm2 de piel de la joven se pudieron conseguir casi 6000 cm2. Para todo esto, científicos de las Universidades de Granada y Sevilla han necesitado más de una década de investigación con materiales imitadores de la piel humana y ensayos en animales. La patente de este método para generar piel autóloga pertenece al Servicio Andaluz de Salud, SAS, y a la Universidad de Granada. Las ventajas de este tipo de piel son que es una piel más resistente y elástica y que evita infecciones y pérdida de líquidos.
La paciente está evolucionando favorablemente, mucho más rápido que cualquier otro paciente con piel transplantada, en un mes recibirá el alta. Hasta ahora, las donaciones eran de fallecidos, lo que implicaba que el receptor sufriese el rechazo inmunológico de estas células y que este estuviese expuesto a un mayor número de infecciones.
En unas semanas otros dos paciente con quemaduras en el 70% y en el 40% de su cuerpo, respectivamente, serán tratados con piel autóloga, también en el mismo hospital. Se espera que de aquí a unos meses el tratamiento pueda realizarse en toda España.

The women suffered burns in the 70% of her body since April, getting cells from her own skin. This fact will accelerate her recovery, reduce the infections and what is more important, avoid immunological rejection, because if the transplanted cells contain the same DNA as the receptor cells, the immunological system will not attack the transplanted cells. Cells have been implanted together with agarose, a substance extracted from algae that increases skin elasticity. The deformation ability of this skin is crutial to be legally used in a surgical intervention.
From 4 cm2 of skin from the woman, almost 6000 cm2 could be obtained. Scientists from the Universities of Granada and Seville have neede more than a decade to get to this, doing research with materials imitating human skin and tests in animals. The patent of the method to obtain autologous skin belongs to the Health Service of Andalucía (SAS, according to the initials in Spanish) and Granada University. This skin is more resistent and elastic and prevents more infections and liquid loses than any other type of transplanted skin.
The patient is evolving favorably, much faster than any other patient ever treated with a skin transplant, getting the medical discharge in one month's time. Until now, donations came from dead people, so the receptor was exposed to a higher possibility of getting an infection and suffering the effects of immunological rejection.
In a few weeks, two more patients with burns in 70 and 40% of their bodies, respectively, will be treated with autologous skin. It is expected that in a few months time the treatment could be performed in all Spain.
