La ciudad del ártico sueco, Kiruna, se hunde. Esto es lo que han confirmado ciertos estudios en la zona. Kiruna ha sido una ciudad con una importante actividad minera, y quizás es esto lo que termine con ella, ya que las excavaciones mineras, a pesar de estar a más de un kilómetro por debajo de la superficie, están agrietando el subsuelo de la ciudad. Antes de 2050, la ciudad entera habrá colapsado.
La solución al problema es "mover" toda la ciudad unos kilómetros al este y crear una ciudad híbrida entre construcciones antiguas y nuevas en un periodo de 30 años, con un presupuesto de algo menos de 3400 millones de dólares (algo más de 3000 millones de euros) proporcionados en su mayor parte no por el sector público, sino por la compañía explotadora de las minas de Kiruna y otras industrias. La propuesta es de Göran Cars, profesor de planificación urbanística en el Instituto Real de Tecnología de Suecia, en Estocolmo.
Las opciones a escoger para los habitantes de Kiruna son: trasladar su antigua casa o demolerla y construir una nueva. En el primer caso, se tiene que estudiar la viabilidad del traslado de la vivienda, y si se aprueba, extraer con grandes grúas hasta el último cimiento de cada casa a trasladar en el caso de que el edificio sea "pequeño" o trasladar "ladrillo a ladrillo" el edificio si este es muy grande, como el caso de la iglesia de la ciudad.
Todo este proyecto no se va a quedar en agua de borrajas, ya que actualmente el sistema de tuberías y alcantarillado de la nueva Kiruna está construido. Se utilizará el calor remanente de las minas para calentar agua en la nueva ciudad, ahorrándose hasta un 30% en energía y se utilizarán aislantes térmicos en los edificios más eficientes, por lo que la nueva Kiruna será también una ciudad ecológica, eficiente y sostenible.
Lo primero en moverse será el centro de la ciudad, con los edificios públicos como el Ayuntamiento, iglesias, hospitales y colegios y con el paso del tiempo, el resto de viviendas. La antigua Kiruna se convertirá en zonas verdes.

The solution provided consists in "moving" the whole town two kilometres to the east and creating an hybrid city with old and brand new buildings in 30 years' time, with a budget slightly lower than US$3400 million (more than €3000 million) provided mostly by the company in charge of Kiruna's mines and other industries. No cent has come from public sources. The whole solution has been given by Göran Cars, urban planification professor in the Royal Technology Institute of Sweden, in Stockholm.
The options that people from Kiruna must choose are: moving their houses or demolish it and build a new one. In the first case, viability of the move has to be analyzed and if it is aprooved, extracting with big tows all the house with its foundation has to de done, in case the building is "small". In case it is "big", the building will be moved "brick by brick", as happens with the church of the city.
All this project will not end up in nothing, since all the pipelines and all the sewage system of new Kiruna have already been built. Heat coming from the mines of the old town will be used in heating water, saving up to a 30% in energy and brand new thermal insulator which are very efficient will be used, too, so new Kiruna will be an ecological, efficient and sustainable city.
The first buildings in moving will be the ones in the centre, as public buildings as for instance the Town Hall, churches, hospitals and schools and with the time, the rest of houses. Old Kiruna will be converted into green zones.
