Zakinthos y la ciudad sumergida/ Zakinthos and the submerged city

Hace un par de años, unos buceadores en las inmediaciones de la isla griega de Zakynthos divisaron determinadas formaciones como columnas o suelos pavimentados. Tras este increíble descubrimiento los buceadores avisaron a las autoridades griegas para determinar si se trataba de alguna antigua metrópoli griega tragada por el mar hace cientos o quizá miles de años.

Estos dos últimos años el Ministerio de Cultura griego ha desplegado un dispositivo con los más expertos arqueólogos submarinos en la zona, para determinar el origen de esta supuesta ciudad. Tras estos últimos meses, se ha llegado a la conclusión final: los restos sumergidos no son de origen humano. Y, por desgracia para los conspiranoicos, tampoco es de origen extraterrestre; se trata de una serie de construcciones llevadas a cabo por bacterias.

Estas construcciones son el resultado de la mineralización de hidrocarburos  como el metano, por parte de las bacterias mencionadas antes. Estos gases surgieron por el efecto de la rotura de una falla en las inmediaciones de Zakynthos. Las bacterias utilizaron durante millones de años estos gases como fuente de energía, oxidándolos y formando un mineral llamado dolomita, bastante frecuente en formaciones con vida bacteriana.

A couple of years ago, divers in the zone of the Greek island of Zakynthos saw some formations such as columns or paved floors. After this incredible discovery, the divers talked to the Greek authorities to determine if all the constructions made part of an ancient city swallowed by the sea hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

These last two years, the Greek Culture Ministry has set up a research in the zone with the most expert submarine archaelogists in order to know the origin of this city. After all these months, a conclusion has been reached: the submerged constructions have no human origin. And, we are so sorry to tell conspiranoic people reading us that it has neither an extraterrestrial origin. It has all been built by bacteria.

These buildings are the result of the hydrocarbon mineralization by the so-called bacteria. These gases, as for instance methane, got out from the rupture of a fault in the zone of Zakynthos. Bacteria used during millions of years these gases as an energy source, oxidizing them and forming a mineral called dolomite, which is very frequent in ecosystems based on bacterial life
