Tres Universidades barcelonesas: Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Politécnica de Cataluña (UPC) y la propia Universidad de Barcelona (UB) se han aliado para ofrecer un nuevo grado, el cual se ve interesante: el Grado en Bioinformática. Dicho grado constará de tres años. Hasta ahora se había ofrecido como un postgrado a estudiar tras terminar un grado relacionado con la propia Bioinformática, como podría ser por ejemplo la Ingeniería Biomédica.
El grado oferta 40 plazas y además se impartirá en inglés, lo que facilitará el futuro laboral de los estudiantes, dado el fuerte retraso que presenta España en estas disciplinas. Las clases, laboratorios, seminarios, etc se darán en el campus de la Pompeu Fabra, salvo un trimestre del segundo año, que se dará en la Universidad de Barcelona y otro trimestre del tercer año, en la Politécnica de Cataluña. Los alumnos podrán trabajar en instalaciones similares a las de sus futuros puestos de trabajo, dentro de superordenadores, recibiendo una formación basada en la interpretación tanto de datos biológicos como computacionales, con una sólida base en Biología, Matemáticas, Estadística, Programación, Bioquímica... Los estudiantes podrán cursar algunos años en países extranjeros como Austria, Alemania, Polonia, Holanda o Italia.
La Bioinformática ya se ofrece como carrera universitaria en otros países como EEUU, Reino Unido, la India o Alemania, por lo que será un fuerte avance en España la implementación de esta enseñanza, dado el gran futuro y potencial que tiene la Bionformática. Lo raro es ver cómo no se ha implementado hasta ahora. Los principales sectores en los que la Bioinformática está más presente a nivel laboral es el farmacéutico, el biomédico, el biológico e incluso ciertos sectores de la industria.
Las tres Universidades son consideradas de las mejores de España, de acuerdo a los últimos rankings realizados, haciendo que Cataluña sea la región más avanzada de España en cuanto a calidad universitaria, quedando bastante lejos de la segunda región con mejor calidad universitaria, Madrid. La Pompeu Fabra ocupa el puesto de mejor universidad de España, seguida por la Politécnica de Cataluña. La Universidad de Barcelona se coloca en quinto lugar, empatada con otras Universidades españolas.
Three Universities from Barcelona: Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Polytechnic of Catalonia (UPC) and the University of Barcelona (UB) itself have allied to offer a new bachelor which seems to be interesting: Bachelor in Bioinformatics. This bachelor will last three years. Until now it was offered as a master to study after finishing a bachelor related to Bioinformatics, as could happen with Biomedical Engineering, for example.
The bachelor offers place for 40 students and will be taught in English, what will make easier the future of the graduates, since this discipline arrives with delay to Spain. Classes, labs, seminars, etc will be imparted in Pompeu Fabra's campus, with the exception of a trimester of the Second year in the University of Barcelona and another trimester of the Third year in Polytechnic of Catalonia. Students will work in similar facilities than the ones where they will work when they finish the bachelor, inside supercomputers, receiving a formation based in the interpretation of biological and computational data, with a solid basis in Biology, Mathematics, Statistics, Programming, Biochemistry... Students will be able to study some years abroad in Austria, Germany, Poland, Netherlands or Italy.
Bioinformatics is already being offered as a bachelor in USA, UK, India or Germany; what will suppose an important advance in the teaching of this discipline in Spain, as it is a discipline with lots future and potential. The strange thing is how the bachelor has not been implemented until now. The main sectors where Bioinformatics has special relevance are the pharmaceutic, the biomedical and the biological ones, and even some industrial sectors.
The three Universities are placed between the best of all Spain, according to the last rankings performed, making that Catalonia is the place with better Universities, being far away from the second region with better Universities, Madrid. Pompeu Fabra University is considered the best University in Spain, followed by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. Barcelona University is located in the 5th place, with other Spanish Universities.
