El 23 de mayo de 1967 una fuerte tormenta solar colapsó los satélites militares estadounidenses que estaban en ese momento en la órbita terrestre. Los mandatarios del ejército del país norteamericano consideraron esto como una declaración de guerra, con lo que decidieron iniciar un bombardeo nuclear sobre su principal rival en la Guerra Fría, la Unión Soviética.
Afortunadamente, algo después el ejército estadounidense reconoció que fue una tormenta solar y no los soviéticos los que fundieron sus satélites. Esto hoy en día no hubiese pasado, debido a que hay bastantes observatorios solares que están atentos minuto a minuto, segundo a segundo, de la actividad solar, y que pueden alertar a toda la población mundial sobre una potente tormenta solar.
Ahora, antiguos oficiales y físicos del ejército de EEUU han destapado todo y han contado cómo una tormenta solar, y la ignorancia de los norteamericanos, casi inician la Tercera Guerra Mundial.
Desde los años 50, la actividad solar empezó a ser registrada con telescopios terrestres, y no fue hasta la década siguiente, en los 60, cuando se descubrió que en las tormentas solares, las eyecciones de masa coronal (expulsión de gases de las capas más externas del Sol) que forman parte del viento solar eran capaces de alterar los sistemas de telecomunicaciones. En 1967 se registró una alta concentración de manchas solares, zonas más oscuras y a menor temperatura en la superficie del Sol, que suelen preceder a fuertes tormentas.
El día de la tormenta, distintos observatorios en EEUU registraron una alta actividad solar. Tras la tormenta, varios radares de emplazamiento de misiles estadounidenses se desconectaron, en Alaska, Groenlandia y Reino Unido, en donde era de día en aquellos momentos, estando expuestos de forma directa a la tormenta. Todo esto se achacó a un bombardeo nuclear de la URSS, con lo que EEUU comenzó un plan para contraatacar, hasta que el brote de llamaradas cesó, y con ello también los supuestos "ataques" soviéticos, de modo que los planes de ataque se abortaron. El ejército estadounidense haciendo el ridículo, como de costumbre. Desde aquel día ya tuvieron más en cuenta la acción de otros elementos, aparte del enemigo.
Como curiosidad, durante la semana que se dieron las llamaradas, las auroras boreales llegaron a registrarse en latitudes inferiores a los 30º, algo inusual, ya que son más frecuentes en los polos, al ser las zonas donde la magnetosfera es más delgada.
On May 23rd 1967 a strong solar storm collapsed the military satellites of USA that were orbiting the Earth at those moments. The leaders of the army of the North-Amercian country considered this fact as a declaration of war, deciding to begin a nuclear bombing over its main enemy in the Cold War, the Soviet Union.
Fortunately, some days later the North-American army acknowledged that it was a solar storm and not the USSR the ones who broke the satellites. Nowadays, this would not have happened, as there are several solar observatories analyzing the solar activity every minute and every second, being able to alert everybody if a very strong storm arrives to the planet.
Now, retired officers and physicists of the USA army have revealed everything and have told how a solar storm, and the ignorance of the army, almost begin the WWIII.
In the 50s the solar activity started to being registered with telescopes from the Earth, and it was not until the following decade, in the 60s, when it was discovered that the solar storms, where coronal mass ejections (CMEs), expulsion of gases of the outer layers of the Sun which make part of the solar winds, are able to destroy the telecommunication systems. In 1967 a higher concentration in solar spots, dark spots at a lower temperature which appear before solar storms, was registered.
In the day of the storm, different observatories in the USA registered a high solar activity. After the storm, several missile siting radars were disconnected, in Alaska, Greenland and in the UK, where there was daylight, being directly exposed to the solar radiation. The USSR was blamed for this, so the USA started a plan to counterattack, until the storm ended and surprisingly, the Soviet "attacks" ended too, so the plans were aborted. The USA army being ridiculous, as always. From that day on, they took into account the action of other elements in wars, appart from the enemy.
As a curiosity, during the week when the storm happened, aurora borealis were registered in latitudes lower than 30º, something unusual as they tend to happen in the poles, where the magnetosphere is thinner.
