El Instituto Astrofísico de Canarias (IAC), en España, ha conseguido obtener la imagen más profunda y antigua del Universo, gracias al Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC), el telescopio óptico e infrarrojo más grande del mundo, situado en la isla canaria de La Palma. La imagen es diez veces más profunda que la anterior que se había obtenido.
La imagen se obtuvo tras más de ocho horas de observación, detectándose un halo formado por más de 4000 millones de estrellas alrededor de la galaxia UGC00180, en su parte más externa, suponiéndose que estas estrellas provienen de la destrucción de otras galaxias cercanas y menores.
Con estas técnicas se espera llegar a conocer más galaxias profundas y así poder conocer más datos sobre el origen no solo de las galaxias, sino de todo el Universo.
Astrophysics Institute of the Canary Islands (IAC, according to the initials in Spanish), in Spain, has succeeded in obtaining the deepest and most ancient image of the Universe, thanks to the Great Canaries Telescope (GTC, according to the initials in Spanish, again), the largest optical and infrarred telescope in the world, located in the Canary island of La Palma. The image is ten times deeper than the deepest one obtained.
The image was obtained after more than eight hours of observation, detecting a halo of more than 4000 million of stars surrounding the galaxy UGC00180, in its outer part, being supposed that these stars come from the destruction of close and smaller galaxies.
With these techniques it is expected to know more deep galaxies and then know more data about the origin not only of galaxies, but also of the entire Universe.
