Un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de Cornell, EEUU, ha determinado que no podremos tener contacto con seres de otros mundos hasta dentro de, al menos, 1500 años. Por lo tanto, este estudio intenta demostrar que tampoco hemos tenido hasta ahora ningún contacto con extraterrestres, durante todos estos largos millones de años de existencia desde nuestros antepasados.
¿Por qué 1500 años y no cualquier otra cifra? El estudio se basa en dos teorías científicas y filosóficas, la Paradoja de Fermi (la contradicción entre la alta probabilidad de que haya formas de vida alienígenas en nuestro Universo y que no se haya encontrado evidencia alguna, o eso nos hacen creer, de la existencia de dichas formas de vida) y el Principio de Mediocridad (las condiciones para que se dé vida como la terrestre pueden ser las mismas en cualquier lugar del Universo, nuestra región del Universo no tiene nada de especial). La única forma en la que los terrestres hemos mandado pruebas de nuestra existencia es a través de señales de radio, viajando a la velocidad de la luz desde hace más de 80 años (cabe destacar el mensaje enviado desde el Telescopio de Arecibo, en Puerto Rico). Los extraterrestres tendrían que descifrar en sonidos las radiofrecuencias, buscar el significado del mensaje, entender dicho significado y enviar una respuesta.
Si todas esas ondas se enviaron hace 80 años y viajan a la velocidad de la luz, ahora mismo están a 80 años luz de la Tierra. En un radio de 80 años luz de la Tierra se estima, por estadística, la existencia de más de 8000 estrellas y de más de 3000 exoplanetas similares a la Tierra. Se cree que ya, incluso en estos mismos momentos, estas señales puedan estar siendo interpretadas por formas de vida extraterrestres. Los autores escatiman que hasta que las señales no barran la mitad de toda la Vía Láctea, en unos 750 años, no se generará ninguna respuesta alienígena, tardando esta otros 750 años hasta llegar a nosotros, en caso de que esta respuesta fuese también radiofónica, sin llegar a romper los límites de la Física, tal y como la conocemos ahora.
El proyecto SETI (Búsqueda de Inteligencia Extraterrestre, según sus siglas en inglés), busca lo que su propio nombre indica, formas de vida inteligentes con las que comunicarnos. Este proyecto ha sido el encargado de mandar todas las señales al Espacio, como por ejemplo las señales del Telescopio de Arecibo, mencionadas anteriormente. Salvo en una excepción, nunca se ha recibido respuesta. Esta excepción se da con la Señal ¡Wow! , una señal recibida en agosto de 1977 por una computadora de un radio-observatorio, siendo hasta 30 veces más intensa que el ruido de fondo que se puede percibir por un radio-telescopio, y cuyo origen se cree que pudo ser extraterrestre, aunque hace unos meses se demostró que en aquella época una serie de cometas, desconocidos entonces, pasó "cerca" (varios millones de km) de la Tierra, y que pudo haber emitido dicha señal.

A group of researchers from Cornell University, USA, has determined we would not be able to keep in touch with aliens in a 1500 years' time. Therefore, this study takes for granted that we had not had any contact before with aliens, during all these millions of years we have been here on Earth.
Why in 1500 years' time and not any other figure? The study is based on two scientifical and phylosophycal theories, Fermi Paradox (there is a high probablility of extraterrestrial life in our Universe, but we do not have any evidence about it) and Mediocrity Principle (life, as it is known in Earth, could develop in any corner of our Universe, our region in Universe has nothing special). The only way humans have sent evidence of their existance is by radio signals sent 80 years ago that travel at the speed of light (we may hightlight the messages sent from Arecibo Telescope, in Puerto Rico). Aliens would have to decode the message, look for the meaning of the message, understand that meaning and send an answer.
If all that waves travel at the speed of light and were sent 80 years ago, they will have arrived 80 light years away from Earth. In a radius of 80 light years around Earth it is estimated, statistically, that there are more than 8000 stars with more than 3000 exoplanets similar to Earth. It is thought that the messages could have been detected by extraterrestrial ways of life, and what is more, now, when you are reading this, they can be decoding the radio signals. Authors from this work think that the signal will not be discovered by an inteligent way of life until at least, the radio signals have gone through the half of the Milky Way. This could happen in 750 years. The answer sent by aliens would spend other 750 years to be received by us, if and always if the alien signals have the same nature as ours and do not break Physics limits, as we know them now.
Project SETI (Search of ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) is the one in charge of sending all those messages to Space. One of example of these messages can be the one sent from Arecibe Radiotelescope, as aforementioned. There has been no answer, with the exception of the Wow! Signal, received in August 1977 by a computer in a radiotelescope, being 30 times stronger than the background noise that can be received from any radiotelescope and that is thought that could be emitted by aliens, although a possible explanation was proposed some months ago: in August 1977, a comet cloud, unknown then, went "near" (some millions of km) Earth, emitting that signal.
