Investigadores de la Universidad de California en Davis (UC Davis), en Estados Unidos, quieren modificar embriones de cerdo para conseguir el desarrollo de órganos humanos en ellos, y así facilitar los transplantes de órganos porcinos a humanos, también conocidos como xenotransplantes (entre especies). Hasta ahora, hemos oído hablar de transplantes de determinados órganos del cerdo, como las válvulas cardíacas, a humanos, e incluso de transplantes de corazón de cerdo a babuinos, los cuales llegaron a sobrevivir hasta dos años.
El mecanismo de creación de estos órganos humanos se inicia con la creación de embriones cerdo-humano o embriones quimera. Dichos embriones se obtienen al editar un gen del embrión recién fecundado, el gen CRISPR, para que se cultive el órgano en cuestión y se inyectan en el embrión células iPS (células madre pluripotentes inducidas). Este embrión al nacer tendrá todas sus células como las de cualquier cerdo, salvo las del órgano modificado en el desarrollo embrionario, el cual estaría compuesto por células humanas, y así este órgano tendría una mayor probabilidad de ser compatible a la hora de la realización del transplante, además de ser un órgano más joven y en mejor estado.
Ejemplos de órganos que se podrían desarrollar en cerdos podrían ser páncreas, corazón, hígado, riñones, pulmones o córneas. La próxima etapa pasa por el desarrollo de neuronas humanas para tratar el Parkinson.
Como siempre, hay polémica. Ciertas personas piensan que las células humanas podrían migrar al cerebro del cerdo, y hacerlo más inteligente (nosotros, al menos, no sabemos qué base científica podrían tener estas declaraciones), por lo que la financiación de estas investigaciones han quedado en suspenso. Se ha dejado crecer a los embriones hasta más de la mitad de su desarrollo, pero los investigadores afirman que si estos embriones empiezan a desarrollar rasgos humanos, el proyecto se cancelaría.
No sólo ha habido quejas por el posible, aunque sin base científica, desarrollo de un carácter humano en los cerdos utilizados, sino que también se han dado las típicas quejas de las protectoras de animales en contra del sufrimiento animal.
Nosotros siempre estaremos a favor de la salvación de vidas humanas, cueste lo que cueste. No creemos que sea justo la cancelación de este interesante proyecto por culpa de unas declaraciones sin ninguna, repetimos, ninguna base científica, como la de que los cerdos sean más humanos. Cuánto daño han hecho ciertas películas de Hollywood.
UC Davis researchers, in USA, want to modify pig embryos for developing human organs in them, and therefore make easier the transplants of pig organs to humans, also known as xenotransplants (between different species). Unitil now we have heard of certain pig's organs transplants, as heart valves, to humans, and even of heart transplants to baboon, which have been able to survive during two years.
The mechanism to obtain these organs begins with the creation of pig-human embryos, also called chimera embryos. The so-called embryos are obtained by gene editing, with the CRISPR gene, in order to cultivate the human organ and iPS cells are injected (induced pluripotent stem cells). When being born, the pig will have all his cells normal, as any pig, except the cells corresponding to the organ we want to develop, which would be formed by human cells and then this organ would have a higher probability to be compatible when performing the transplant, appart from being a younger organ in a better state.
Some organs that could be transplanted are pancreas, hearts, levers, kidneys, lungs or cornea. Next stage consists in generating human neurons in order to treat Parkinson's disease.
But as always happens with these kind of projects, we have people opposing to them. Some people suggest tha t the human organ's cells could migrate to the pig's brain and make the pig more human (we at least do not know the scientifical basis for tis hypothesis). This has caused that the investment in this project has been cut off. Embryos have grown during more time than half of their development, but researchers claim that if embryos started to develop human features, the project would be cancelled.
Not only for this possible, but without scientific basis, human development in pigs has people complained, but also there have been the typical complaints from Animal-protecting NGOs, against pigs suffering.
We will always be in favor of saving people' s lives, without caring about the price. We do not think it is fair that this interesting project could be cancelled because of some nonsense that has been said. There is no scientific basis supporting that pigs would get more human, no basis. Hollywood movies have hurt lots of people minds.
